Alex Tyrrell and Josh Lindsey Named to the USCAA All-Academic Team
Point guard Alex Tyrrell and post player Josh Lindsey received USCAA’s highest accolade at the USCAA National Championship Banquet on March 1. Both were named to the USCAA All-Academic Team. In order to qualify for this honor a student-athlete must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Alex Tyrrell is a sophomore Business major with a 3.7 GPA. Alex hails from Sydney, Australia. He averaged just under 10 points per game and led the team in assists. “Alex had a great year by any measurement, said his coach, John Dyer. “He ranked among the top five in the USCAA in assists all year long and hit 89% from the free throw line. He is an excellent student and has a remarkable feel for the game. He is one of the most basketball savvy players I’ve ever coached and he is one very fierce competitor. I also think he’s one of the funniest guys on the planet. He has a knack for coming out with just the right movie line at just the right time. Its hard not to smile around Al. ”
Josh Lindsey is a freshman in terms of basketball eligibility
but a sophomore in terms of academic standing because he earned so
many advanced placement credits in high school and he took
community college courses. Josh hails from Palm
Bay, Florida. He is a Business major with a 3.9 GPA.
Josh was a vital member of this year’s team. He earned
a starting role, averaged just under 10 points per game and hauled
in 7 rebounds a game. “We knew Josh was an outstanding
student coming in—he had a better than perfect 4.2 GPA (out
of 4.0) in high school and college boards at the top of the
charts,” commented Coach Dyer. “He has continued
that pattern of academic excellence at Vermont Tech. I
can’t say I’m surprised. Josh is a very serious,
very focused young man. He sets the bar very high for himself
and then pushes himself to exceed his own expectations. Josh
is extremely coachable. He has a great heart and a strong
character. He has been a huge element in our success this
season. He will be a force next season—on the court and
in the classroom.“
One of this season’s most special moments for me was when Alex and Josh stood before the USCAA backdrop and had their All-American photos taken. I glanced around at their teammates at our table and saw such pride in their faces. These guys are great together. The jokes usually flow non-stop. This was a different moment. We all feel so proud of their accomplishment. “
