USCAA #1 Albany Pharmacy Defeat Lady Knights
Wells scores 16, grabs 10 rebounds
Albany, NY - The Lady Knights of Vermont Tech fell on the road to Albany College of Pharmacy, the #1 ranked women's basketball Division II team in the USCAA, by a final of 66-39.
Rolling into Albany, the Lady Knights had a difficult task ahead of them as waiting for them were the 9-2 Panthers of Albany Pharmacy. Not only would the Knights have to battle a tough opponent, but they would do so without their starting point guard Ama Baker (Jr./Fitchburg, MA) who was out with an injury. Senior Captain Kelly Vellek (Burlington, VT) stepped up and took on the roll, doing an admirable job in Ama's absence. Vellek led the team on the court, doing her best both run the offense score as well as score on her own. She finished with 11 points, 7 assists.
The defensive effort was there for VTC, and they did their best to stop the precise flex offense attack of the home team. In the end, the Knights held Albany to just 40% shooting. The same cannot be said for the offensive side of the ball for the ladies, as they struggled to score in the first half. Going into the break the home team led 30-13.
The second half saw more of the same, although the Knights began to find more of a grove on the offensive end. Paige Wells (So./Orleans, VT) led all scorers with 16, and garnered a double-double by also grabbing 10 rebounds. Stephanie Nault (Sr./Goffstown, NH) pulled down 10 rebounds.
For Albany, Alex Schooley scored 13 and Alyson Johnson 12. Taylor Sullivan led all rebounders with 11, as Kesley Johnson grabbed 10.
The women are now 6-11, 3-4 and will next take to the road to play the University of Maine-Augusta. The game will be played on a neutral court in Portland, ME, with the tip schedule for Saturday, January 26th at 5pm.
