Lady Knights Nipped in Overtime by Southern Maine
Baker Scores 24 in Loss
Randolph Center, VT - The Lady Knights of Vermont Tech dropped to 6-10 (3-4 YSCC) with a 75-60 overtime loss to the SeaWolves of Southern Maine. The loss was the second to SMCC this season. Both games this year were extremely tight, with the first loss for the Knights coming in Portland, ME by only four points.
Ama Baker (Jr./Fitchburg, MA) led VTC in scoring with 24, hitting 50% from behind the three point line and 7-12 from the free throw line. She also contributed 5 steals and 3 assists. Senior Kelly Vellek (Burlington, VT) also met the 20 point mark, connecting on 7 of 15 overall, 4 of 6 from three and 2-3 from the free throw line. Paige Wells (So./Orleans, VT) was the only other Lady Knight in double-figures, scoring 10 and garnering 5 rebounds. Lead rebounder for VTC was Sophomore Alyssa Cassanelli (Barkhamsted, CT) with 9.
Alicia Hoyt led the SeaWolves in scoring with 22, followed closely by Esther Palmieri with 21. Palmieri was clutch in the big moments, scoring an incredible 12 in the overtime and going 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Hoyt secured the double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds, although Nyalieb Deng led the team in rebounds with 12.
Southern Maine controlled the boards, out-rebounding VTC 46-35. Both teams had a difficult time holding onto the ball, SMCC committing 33 turnovers and VTC a season-high 38. The bench of the SeaWolves may have been the deciding factor in the game, out-scoring the Lady Knights 16-2.
Vermont Tech is next in action Thursday night, January 24th on the road against the #1 ranked team in the USCAA, Albany College of Pharmacy.
