Lady Knights Downed by Bengals of UMFK
Sixth Straight Defeat for VTC Women
Randolph Center, VT - The Lady Knights were defeated on Monday night by the Bengals of the University of Maine Fort Kent by the final of 78-53.
The first half of the game Monday night was tightly contested, with the Vermont Tech Lady Knights controlling the defensive flow of the game for the first five minutes. The Knights were able to hold the Bengals to just 4 points in that time, but were only able to manage 3 points of their own. The defensive efforts of both sides was impressive, and each team felt every possession was extremely important.
Jenn Colpitts hit a jumper at 13:40 to put the Bengals up 8-3 and then Ama Baker (Jr./Fitchburg, MA) decided to put the Knights on her back to keep them in the game. Baker made the next 9 points for VTC, bringing them to within 1 point at 10 minutes left in the half. The Bengals continued to attempt to pull away, but every time they scored the Knights responded. Baker capped an incredible first half by hitting a jumper with just 16 seconds remaining. The score gave her 18 in the half, and made the score going into the break UMFK 36, VTC 30.
The second half saw UMFK outlast the Knights, with their starting five asserting their dominance. In addition, foul trouble plagued the home team, as starter Paige Wells (So./Orleans, VT) fouled out with 8 minutes to go in the game. Wells finished with just 3 points, but 7 rebounds. The Bengals took control of the game with a 10-1 run at the 12 minute mark of the half. From that point on the road team never looked back, and ended up outscoring VTC 42-23 in the half.
All five starters scored in double digits for UMFK, with Colpitts leading the way wiht 18 points. Sam Carapellucci led the team in rebounds with 8, in addition to her 14 points.
Baker finished the game with 24 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Kelly Vellek (Sr./Burlington, VT) had 14 points, while Serena Reynolds (Fr./Alburgh, VT) led the Knights in rebounding with 10 to go along with 5 points.
The VTC Women are now 6-6 on the season, and will next host SUNY Canton on Friday at 5pm.
