Women Cruise to Easy Victory
Vellek Ties Career-High with 33 points
Brooklyn, NY - The Vermont Tech Women extended their undefeated record to 6-0 with an easy win over Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY. The final score was 74-11.
The game began with Kelly Vellek (Sr./Burlington, VT) nailing a three-pointer just 20 seconds into the contest, and that was going to be a theme throughout the day. After continuing to knock down shots and help the Knights start the game on a 21-0 run, Vellek finished by tying her career-high with 33 points on 50% shooting from both the field and behind the three-point arc. She added 5 assists and 3 steals. With a Ama Baker (Jr./Fitchburg, MA) made layup the score at the half was 52-8.
More of the same was to come in the second half, as although the Knights slowed the pace the Cougars could simply not score. Vellek hit two threes and Baker a layup to keep the rout going as the score elevated further to 62-8. After a Medgar made basket, Vellek converted yet another 3 to make the score 65-10 with 11 minutes left in the game. The Cougars would score just a single point the rest of the game to make the final 74-11.
The Knights utilized 49 turnovers from the Cougars to score 51 of their points, while limiting their own turnover number to just 14. In addition, the visitors also out-rebounded the home team 45-30 and held their opponents to just 15% shooting for the game. VTC also demonstrated an extreme brand of team basketball by assisting on 25 of the team's 29 baskets.
Baker had another double-double with 18 points and an incredible 14 steals. She rounded out her complete game with 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Sophomore Paige Wells (Orleans, VT) tied Baker with 18 points, as well as grabbing 8 rebounds, 4 steals and dishing 3 assists. Freshman Serena Reynolds (Alburgh,VT) led the team in rebounding with 9.
For Medgar, Antanique Williams scored 5 to lead the Cougars, while four of the members tied to lead the team in rebounding with 5.
The women next travel to play in-state rival Johnson State College on Tuesday, November 27. Game time is set for 530pm.
