Paul Smith's Edges Vermont Tech Men
Bobcats Stifle Knights' Offense
Randolph Center, VT - On a sloppy turf, the Bobcats of Paul Smith's College bested the Knights of Vermont Tech by the final of 2-0. The win elevated the visitors to 6-4, 5-2, while the loss was the second straight for the men of VTC.
Despite the rainy weather and muddy slippery field, the visiting team came into Vermont Tech ready to play. At just 2:42 into the game Steven Rathbun was able to net a goal on the very first shot on the game. In the end, that is all the defense from Paul Smith's needed, as they completely stifled the offense of Vermont Tech in earning the shutout win. In the end, the Knights garnered just six total shots, three on goal.
The Bobcats added an insurance goal later in the first half when Max Calderone scored shortly after entering the game as a substitute. The goal at 36:19 was scored on a rebound, as Paul Smith's Jesse Fenlon took a shot that was saved by Nate James (Sr./Arlington, VT). However, due to the wet conditions James was unable to secure the ball, and Calderone followed with the tap-in.
The second half was played mostly in the middle of the mud-slopped field, with long stretched of time between either team garnering any solid offense. Knight forwards Wellington Netwon (So./Burlington, VT) and Hannes Fisher-Byrne (Jr./Strafford, VT), second and third on the team in terms of points on the season, had an extremely difficult time getting through the defense of the visitors. The leading scorer on the season for the Knights, Matt Golden (Sr./Lisbon, NH) sat out another game due to injury.
Goalie James stopped ten of the twelve shots on goal, although Paul Smith's record 26 total shots, while Bobcat goalie Ryan Little only had to handle three shots in taking the victory.
The Knights fall to 3-6, 2-4 on the season and will next host the College of St. Joseph's (VT) on Wednesday October 3rd. The contest will be the last home game of the season for either soccer team. Game time is set for 4pm.
