Vermont Tech Women hang on for 44-43 win over EMCC
Saturday afternoon Abby Fusco knocked down a 3-point basket with under 10 seconds left in the game to give the Vermont Tech Knights a 44-43 win over Eastern Maine Community College in a womens basketball match up at Johnston Gymnasium in Bangor
EMCC trailed by as much as nine points during the first 15 minutes of the second half, but rallied back to tie the game at 35-35 with 4:49 left to play. A Sarah Long basket with 3:20 to play put the Golden Eagles on top 39-37. After the Knights tied the game at 41-41, Long came through again with a put back basket to give EMCC a 43-41 lead with 25 seconds remaining before Fusco found herself wide open on the wing and dropped in the three pointer for the game winning basket.
Leading the Knights in scoring was Fusco with 12 points, Chelsea Carpenter with 10, and Abby Sholten with nine. Kelsey Ward scored seven and Kelly Vellek chipped in with six. Sholten had nine boards to pace the Knights. Ward added seven rebounds and Vellek had six. The Knights shot 26 per cent from the floor, going 17-for-63. Fusco went 4-for-8 from 3-point range. They went 5-for-14 from the free throw line.
Long scored a game high 13 points to pace EMCC, and Angela Levesque added 12 points. Also scoring for the Golden Eagles was Caroline Weymouth (8), Dani Ross (7), Ashlee Gifford (2), and Kelsey Boss (1). Long pulled down a game high 16 rebounds, and Levesque added 11 boards. Ross added six rebounds and three assists. EMCC shot 28 per cent from the floor (17-60), and they went 8-for-12 from the charity stripe. The Eagles struggled from behind the arc going 1-for-14 for the game.
