MEN'S SOCCER FALL TO PILGRIMS IN HOME OPENER
Randolph, Vt. – The Vermont State University Randolph men's soccer team battled throughout but ultimately came up short, dropping a 2–0 decision at home against New England College on Saturday afternoon.
The Pilgrims struck right away, scoring in the opening minute off a corner kick. Erik Corbin connected with a service from Jack LaBroad to put NEC ahead 1–0 before the Knights had time to settle in.
Randolph's defense held firm for the remainder of the first half, keeping the Pilgrims from adding to their lead. In the second half, however, NEC doubled the advantage in the 57th minute as Ezekiel Weir finished a chance set up by Trevor Peal, giving the visitors a 2–0 cushion that stood until the final whistle.
Gabe Sokolnicki earned the start in goal for the Knights, playing 71 minutes and registering six saves while facing eight shots on goal. Steven Smith came on for the final 19 minutes and was sharp, stopping all four shots he faced to keep Randolph within striking distance. In total, Randolph's keepers combined for 10 saves against 12 shots on target from the Pilgrims.
Offensively, Randolph found opportunities limited against a strong NEC back line. The Knights managed four total shots, with Angel Baharona recording the team's lone shot on goal. New England College controlled possession throughout, holding a 20–4 edge in shots and a 10–1 advantage in corner kicks.
Despite the result, Randolph showed discipline and resilience on the defensive end, playing a clean match without committing a foul.
The Knights look to rebound on the road at Fisher College.
