Men’s Soccer Strong Start as they stun Unity 6-1
Once the Men's soccer team scored their first goal of the game there was no looking back as the Green Knight pulled in their first victory of the season over Unity 6-1.
Freshmen Phillip Hepburn (Milton, VT) got things going in the 29th minute, after scoring his second goal of the season. Freshmen AJ Alunujaym (Saudi Arabia) was able to hold off the Rams defenders while Hepburn ran into the 18-yard box, Alunujaym split the defense making it easy for Hepburn to put it in the back of the net putting Vermont Tech up 1-0.
Vermont Tech was able to take control of the first half, Senior Joaquin Currier-Cubero (Danville, VT) took advantage of a cross from Hepburn to find the back of near post to send the Green knights up 2-0. Currier-Cube was not done yet as he found a hole through the Unity defense to find Freshmen Hunter Brock (Royalton, VT) running in on the far post. This would be Brocks first collegiate goal.
In the 45th minute the Green Knight's had trouble clearing a ball, but Derrick Bates dilled a shot into the back of the net putting it past Senior goalkeeper Darian Calverley (Attleboro, MA). Vermont Tech led at the half 3-1.
Hepburn got the offense started again in the 74th minute when he was able to capitalize on Alunujaym cross from the right hand side putting the score at 4-1. Two minutes later Currier-Cube made an impressive shot from the left side of the field and barring the ball in the upper ninety of the far post which was no match for Unity's Keeper Mackenzie Michaud. Alunujaym would also score his first colligate goal in the 86th minute to put the green nights up 6-1 for their first win of the season.
Calverley made six saves on the day while splitting time with Freshmen Dylan Malo (Hoosick Falls, NY) who earned one save.
Next Up: Vermont Tech will take its first road trip of the season to take on College of Saint Joe's (VT) in YSCC Conference play on Thursday September 9, 2015 with a 4:00pm kick off.
