Green Knight Men's Soccer Sink Hampshire in the 85th
Golden continues stellar play with winning goal
Vermont Tech Junior Matt Golden (Lisbon, NH), the reigning VTC Player of the Week, continued his amazing play with two goals, including the go-ahead winner at the 85th minute to beat Hampshire College by a score of 4-3. The road win marked the men's second win of the season, and first away from the confines of Randolph Center.
The first goal came early for the Green Knights as Sophomore Brian Cole (Wallingford, VT) shot and scored within the first five minutes of the game. The score, however, did not put Hampshire on their heels, but rather seemed to enthuse their offense. They answered the early score in quick succession when three minutes later they connected on a penalty kick to tie the game at 1. Golden, as has been the theme in recent contests, stepped up for VTC, netting a goal at the 25 minute mark to put the Knights back up by 1. Hampshire once again answered with a goal shortly before halftime, and the teams entered the break tied at 2.
Hampshire came out strong in the second half, scoring quickly to take their first lead of the game. The half was hotly contested with several scoring opportunities for each side. Freshman Daniel Mujica (Caracas, Venezuela) finally broke through for the Knights at the 75th minute, once again tying the game. From there Golden took over, waiting a short ten minutes to score the winner. Senior Goal Keeper Alex Berteau (Milton, VT) had 6 saves.
Hampshire College is now 0-2, 0-2 YSCC, while the VTC men improve to 2-4, 2-2. Hampshire next plays at St. Joe's (VT) on Sunday, September 18 at 2pm. VTC hosts NHTI on Wednesday, September 21 at 430pm.
