Knights Top SeaWolves for Second Time this Season
Tyrrell Scores 23 and Matano Hits for 19 Off Bench
Randolph Center, VT - The men of Vermont Tech were able to again, like earlier this season, handle the SeaWolves of Southern Maine, defeating the visitors by the final of 77-70. In their first meeting of the year, the Knights defeated SMCC on the road in Portland, ME by the final of 84-71.
Knight Senior Alex Tyrrell (Sydney, Australia) tied with Southern Maine's Joe Amabile to lead all scorers with 23, going 8-15 from the field, 5 for 5 from the free throw line. He also snagged 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Newcomer Brandon Matano (Junior, Honolulu, HI) came off the bench to contribute 19 points on 8 of 15 shooting. Senior Josh Lindsey was the final Knights in double figures, scoring 14 points and grabbing 5 rebounds. Sam Marler (Fr./Sydney, Australia) led the team both in rebounds and assists, coming down with 7 boards and dishing 11 assists.
To go with Amabile's 23 points, Emmanuel Donalson scored in double figures for the SeaWolves, hitting for 15 points. He also had 6 rebounds. Joe Nouchanthavong led SMCC in rebounds, snatching 7.
Even in the loss, SM shot an incredible 56% from the field and 62% from beyond the three point line. The Knights took advantage of the SeaWolves at the free throw line, however, as though SM went 6-9 from the line, VTC went 18-25. In addition, SM committed 23 turnovers to just 12 for the home team. The benches of both teams scored an identical 27 points.
The Knights next host Northern Essex Community College on Tuesday, January 22nd. The tip is scheduled early, with the game beginning at 4pm. After the game on Tuesday, the men then travel to Albany College of Pharmacy on Thursday night, January 24th.
