Women's Basketball grabs win from NHTI in overtime
Randolph Center- Vermont Tech Lady Knights hold on to first place in the YSCC West Division after they defeated conference rival NHTI 84-80 in overtime last night.
Junior Paige Wells led the lady Knights with a career high on the season, scoring 30 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. Wells also stayed on the floor for the entire game. Two other Lady Knights also had career best games. Junior Alyssa Cassanelli had 12 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double, and she hit 83% form the free throw line. Freshman Kaitlin Lyford netted 17 points as she hit five 3point shots, four of them in first half. Lyford was named player of the game by CVTSPORTS, making her the only player to be named player of the game in both high school and college.
NHTI (10-10 overall, 4-5 YSCC) trailed by as many as 10 points early in the first half, but rallied back to pull the game within one at the end of the first half. During the second half the game stayed close as there were 15 lead changes. Vermont Tech (7-8 overall, 5-4 YSCC) trailed by seven points with 5:24 left in the second half, when Senior Ama Baker hit a jump shot that sparked the Lady Knights to a run and take the lead with 2:25 left in the game. With 1:52 to go NHTI's Thalia Garcia was able to convert a three point play to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Garcia hit the first jump shot of the overtime, but it wasn't long until the Lady Knights went to work. Vermont Tech started a 9-0 scoring run with 3:09 left in overtime to clinch the win. Cassanelli and Wells hit 3-4 from the free throw line, while Wells hit two key jump shots in overtime. NHTI's Anary Leek made a three point shot at the buzzar, but it was just not enough to pull out the win.
NHTI was led by Sara Romano with 21 points and 8 steals and Allura Leblanc with 18 points 12 rebounds and 6 steals.
