Men's basketball wins as time runs out!
Randolph Center, VT - On Sunday, February 5 Vermont Tech men's basketball team faced Paul Smith's College in their final regular-season conference game. The men pulled out a last second victory 82-80 on the back of Junior Cameron Carter's (Atlanta, GA) three point buzzer beater. With the win the Knights finish the Yankee conference 11-4 and in second place in their division.
The Knights started the first half well, building the lead to 10 points midway through the half. The visiting Bobcats, an ever improving basketball team, battled hard throughout the game and trailed at the half by four.
The second-half started well for the Knights as they stretched the lead to 15 with seven minutes to go in the game. The Bobcats however, with their never say die attitude, fought back to lead the game by 1 with nine seconds left on the clock. The atmosphere in SHAPE gym was tense! After breaking the Bobcats press the Knights made a pass that was deflected out of bounds with three seconds left on the clock. The men ran a sideline out of bounds play that resulted in Cameron Carter receiving the ball in the right corner from Freshman Deitric Grant (Vicksburg, MS) The junior guard managed to get off a jump shot, draining the game-winning three point basket with .5 seconds left on the clock.
Vermont tech head coach Alex Tyrrell was thankful to come away with a win.
"Cam made a great shot and we are very fortunate to have guys with that ability in the program" said Coach Tyrrell. "I give a ton of credit to the Paul Smith's team being down 15 with seven minutes to go those guys showed a lot of fight to get themselves in a position to win the basketball game".
This game was the 7th win in the last 8 games for the Knights, who beat other conference opponents handily, including Hampshire College, College of St. Joseph's (VT), UMaine Machias and Great Bay Community College.
The men will travel to Fisher College on Wednesday night to face the Falcons and try avenge their overtime loss earlier in January, and then return home for the final games of the season on February 11th against Southern Maine and February 12th against SUNY Canton for the Senior recognition game.
