The Mustangs of Central Maine handed the Knights their first loss of the season Saturday afternoon, 77-59, in Kirk Hall in Auburn, Maine. The temperature was chilly and so were the Vermont Tech shooters. The Knights shot a dismal 7.4% from beyond the arc (2-27) and finished the game hitting only 29% from the floor.
"Tactically speaking, Central Maine played a nearly perfect game," commented Coach John Dyer after the game. "They started five guards, spread the floor on offense and stacked the middle on defense. Their defensive strategy forced us to shoot from distance and we just couldn't throw it in the ocean today. You have to give Coach Gonyea and his guys credit. They really came to play. CM passed the ball with real precision and always seemed to find the open man."
Vermont Tech boasts two of the best three point shooters in the YSCC in Senior Kevin Carr (Westminster, MD) and JuniorAlex Tyrrell (Sydney, Australia). Carr finished the game 0-11 and Tyrrell 0-7 from three point range. "From a shooting perspective, this game was like a bad dream," said Coach Dyer. "This was a real anomaly. Kevin and Alex are very consistent shooters."
Only two Knights scored in double digits. Junior Jhason Clark (Albany, NY) saw his first action this season after suffering a fractured patella in pre-season play. Clark scored ten points. Junior Josh Lindsey (Palm Bay, FL) had a solid game with ten points and nine rebounds.
Nick Hinkley led the Mustangs with 21 points. Alonzo James and Curtis Miller scored 18 and 16 respectively.
The Knights are now 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in the YSCC. Central Maine moves to 9-3 on the season and 3-2 in the YSCC.
