Rebecca Broadbent of Vermont Tech wins YSCC Cross Country Championship

Randolph Center, VT - On Saturday October 22nd Vermont tech hosted our first YSCC conference championship meet.  Conference Schools from Maine, New Hampshire , New York and Vermont competed for the Yankee Small College Conference title.

Despite the mist and cold weather the women's cross country race was one of the most competitive races the conference has seen. Within the first 500 meters of the race 4 runners were battling for the lead and the top prize, including Lara Mathias and Liz O'Brien of Hampshire College, Chloe Matillio of Paul Smith's College and Rebecca Broadbent of Vermont Tech. Each racer took turns running in first place as they ran the first 3.5K of the Vermont Tech 6K course. On a small Hill at the 4K mark Rebecca Broadbent of Vermont Tech (North Dighton, MA) made her move into first place and held on to win the YSCC championship with a course record time of 26:05. Lara Mathias of Hampshire College (26:19) finished in second, just edging out her team mate Liz O'Brien (26:21).  Rebecca repeated as the YSCC Conference title winner from 2014. Also competing for Vermont Tech was Olivia Reynolds who ran to a solid 18th place finish in Conference with a time of 34:14. Olivia is a freshman and is a great asset to the program.

The team competition was also close, with just 27 points between #1 Hampshire, #2 Unity, and #3 Paul Smith's College. NHTI placed fourth in the team competition.

On the men's side, NHTI had an impressive showing with 6 runners in the top 10, and also boasting Freshman Niall Kimball (30:16) with an impressive win by nearly a minute over runner up Robert Calamia (31:10) of Paul Smith's College.  Niall got off to an early lead and led for much of the race.  The challenge for rounding out the top 3 came down to the fial stretch, as Robert beat out NHTI team mates Zach Flanagan (31:14) and Dylan Tuttle (31:18) for the 2nd place finish.  Vermont Tech Freshman Scott Durkee (32:52) went out hard and finished in 9th place overall, followed closely by Sophomore David Mattern (33:10) in 11th.  The Vermont Tech team scored 4th overall, helped by Senior James MacDonald (38:40) who ran a personal best on this course by over 6 minutes, Freshmen Nick Poland (41:03) and Tyler Gammell (47:46).
