Randolph Center, VT – The athletic department at Vermont Tech has announced the 2013 Women's Soccer schedule, comprising twelve games with five of those contests coming on the home field of the Knights. The team begins the season on the road on Saturday, August 31 when they will face the University of Maine-Fort Kent, followed the next day by Holland College of Canada.
The Lady Knights will again be fairly young, with but a few key returning upper classmen. The biggest losses from last year's squad will YSCC All-Conference Forward Ashley Lockerby (Enosburg, VT), the team's leading scorer, Defender Kelly Vellek (Burlington, VT) and Hallie Shea (Lisbon, NH). All-rounder Mallory Fischer (So./Jericho, VT) returns for her second season. Fischer played both in the goal and on the field last year, earning a USCAA National Player of the Week honor for her play in net.
After starting on the road, the Lady Knights return to Vermont for their home opener against Yankee Small College Conference West Divisional opponent Paul Smith's College (Sep. 7). The very next day VTC travels to another YSCC East foe and in-state rival College of St. Joseph's (VT). The Knights follow up the tie against the Fighting Saints with a home contest versus in-state rival Johnson State on Sept. 12. The following weekend Vermont Tech welcomes NCAA DIII in-state rival Lyndon State (Sep. 14), and then take a quick trip to Amherst, MA for more YSCC East competition in Hampshire College (Sep. 15). The Ladies take on NHTI on the road Sept. 19, before again facing Hampshire, this time in Randolph Center on Sunday the 22nd. VTC finishes out September with the re-match against the University of Maine-Fort Kent on Friday the 27th.
October is all about the YSCC playoffs, as the regular season schedule is short and every contest is extremely important to first make the playoffs, and then for seeding. In preparation for them the Knights play a non-conference opponent on the road, before finishing with two YSCC East foes, one on the road and the final at home. On Friday, October 4 VTC travels to Fisher College in Boston, a team to which they have never lost, while on Sunday, October 6 the Ladies travel to Paul Smith's for a pivotal YSCC East matchup. The end of the regular season will undoubtedly have playoff implications as the NHTI Lynx come into Vermont to try to upend the Knights on their home turf.
The first round of the YSCC Playoffs will occur at the field of the higher seeded team starting October 15, while the YSCC Final Four takes place at NHTI in Concord, NH October 19-20.
