Randolph Center, VT - Vermont Tech played host to the Women's Basketball Winter Classic on Jan 9th and 10th. Four teams came together for two days of games.
On day one, Vermont Tech hosted UMaine Presque Isle. The game was close throughout the first half, with the Knights taking the lead after the first period 12-7, and maintaing the lead 27-24 at the half, the Knights had the advantage going into the third period. The owls caught up just a minute into the third quarter, and the teams were answering baskets as the lead changed several times and the Knights were still up by 2 at the end of the 3rd period. The Knights maintained a slight lead, but at 3:20 into the 4th quarter, the Owls went on a 8-2 run to go up 56-48 with 4:26 left in the game. The Knights fought back hard, missing a few key baskets and ended up with the loss at 65-55.
In the second game on Tuesday Fisher College and SUNY Canton tipped off and had an even first quarter, with Fisher Falcons up by 2 over the SUNY Canton Roos. In the second period the Falcons hit the nets hard, scoring 19 points to the Roos 2 in the second half. The Roos couldn't hang on, and in the end Fisher won the game 81-47.
On day two the Knights tool on SUNY Canton and just didn't have good luck in the first period. The Roos went up 7-0 at the start, as the Knights missed 6 baskets in the first 3 minute of the game.The Knights then took their only lead of the game 8-7 after Kiana Royer made 2 free throws. The Knights couldn't keep up, and had a decent shooting percentage of 31, but Canton had a 46% shooting precentage, and controlled the rest of the game. The Roos took the win 79-49.
The second game Tuesday was also not a close one, as Fisher started out with a 3 point shot and never lost the lead. The Owls fought hard the whole game, but they couldn't match baskets with the Falcons, who won the game 77-33.
The Knights play next in a conference match up vs UMaine-Machias at 3pm.
