Randolph Center, VT - Vermont Tech played host to 3 schools for a second year to host the Women's Basketball Winter Classic on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Participating teams include UMaine Presque Isle, SUNY Canton and Fisher College.
Tuesday both games were competitive. In the early game, SUNY Canton played Fisher College to a close finish. The lead changed hands throught the game, but Fisher College held onto an eight-point halftime lead on its way to a 60-55 victory.
In the second game Vermont Tech stayed closed to UMaine Presque Isle for the first half, closing it out within 6 points 36-30. In the second half, Presque Isle came out very strong, and Vermont Tech couldn't sitck with them, losing the game 71-53. Doierann Chesbrough (Burlington, VT) led the Knights with 18 points and 8 rebounds, and right behind her was Paige Wells (Orleans' VT) with a double double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Presque Isle was able to use many of thier players and had 4 players with double digit points on the day.
Wednesday's first game was a battle for the lead throughout the entire first half. Both teams made key shots and the game was tightly played and the lead changed xx times. UMPI ened withthe lead at the half 30-26. In the second hald SUNY Canton came out very strong and was able to turn their game up a notch and out-scored the Owls by nearly 20 points in the third quarter to win the game 67-53.
The second game was not as competitive, with the Knights losing 2 players to injury they just couldn't stick with Fisher College right from the start. The Knights had many good shots, but struggled to get them to drop, playing to just a 15% shooting precentage, and missing all of 10 3-point attempts. Al of Fisher's starters ended up with double digit points and gaining a decisive win 87-22.
Vermont Tech Women play again next wee at NHTI on Wednesday, January 18th at 8pm.
