Randolph Center, VT - The Lady Knights basketball team played a nailbiter tonight against College of St. Joseph's (VT) in a hotly contested conference game. Both teams came out strong and went hard to the basket, although neither team was able to get a basket until Markell Marquez of St. Joe's scored nearly 2 1/2 minutes into the game.
After that the lead went back and forth for several minutes until Vermont Tech went on a 9-0 run to end the first quarter up 19-10. The lady Knights kept up a solid lead through the first half, with the score 33-24 at the break.
In the second half the Knights managed to keep their lead throughout the third quarter, with Paige Wells (Orleans, VT) leading the way with a double double in the game of 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Knights seemed to have good control of the game through out the second half, until St. Joe's broke down the defense and started a 7-0 run with 4 minutes left on the clock to go up 63-61with 3:03 left.
Haley Buffum (Jamaica, VT) put up two key free-throws with 1:34 left in the game to bring the knights within 2 points, but the Knights couldn't pull off the win as Freshman Doireanne Chesbrouugh barely missed the mark on a 3 point shot at the buzzer, ending the game 66-63.
Along with senior Paige Wells, Vermont Tech had 7 players with points on the board, including Doireanne Chesbrough (Burlington, VT) with a game high 19 points, and Haley Buffum (Jamaica, VT) with 12 points.
The Knights travel to the SUNY Delhi tournament this weekend in Delhi, NY and return to play at home vs NHTI on November 29th at 7:30pm.
