Vermont Tech's Broadbent wins home meet

Randolph Center, VT - Vermont Tech hosted our 5th annual home meet and citizens 5K race on Saturday.  In the first race of the day, 4 year Vermont Tech runner Nick Martiros finished first 22:16 taking home the maple syrup and winner's trophy for the men's race atop a larger and faster field than last year.  Last year's winner, Vermont Tech President Dan Smith, finished 5th, nearly a minute faster than last year.  The top female 5K citizen's race runner was Leah Rogstad who finished in a 24:49 time, also taking home the VTC trophy and maple syrup.

On the collegiate women's side, Vermont Tech's own All American Rebecca Broadbent won handily with a 5K finish time of 23:24 over Paul Smith's College Corrie Desilets, who placed second in 24:22.  Emelie Morton also of Paul Smith's rounded out the top three with a finish time of 28:02.  Broadbent pushed through this weekend's race in full training mode as she prepares for the YSCC Championships and USCAA Nationals later this season.

The collegiate men's race followed a new 8K course with adjustments to the course meandering through the neighboring campground due to the construction at the Veteran's Cemetery. Many thanks to the Lake Champagne Campground for allowing us to use the roads and trails.  The men's 8K race was an exciting competition between Paul Smith's College and St. Michael's College.  Even though Paul Smith's runners Cory Roth (28:54) and Joseph St. Cyr (29: 35) took first and second respectively, St Mike's strong showing, starting with Ross Henry (29:57) in third and 6 runners in the top 10 allowed St. Mike's to squeak through with the team victory by 4 points.

Vermont Tech's third place team was led by James Bridges in 11th place (34:10) and Nicholas Guastamach in 15th (37:09).  Jon Henault , Taylor Wensley, Theodore Keith and Hunter Pockett all contributed to a great race for Vermont Tech as well.

Vermont Tech coach Bob Dunkle was thankful for the help with putting on a great event year after year " we really couldn't host such a fantastic race without the volunteer assistance of our other athletes on campus helping to make our beautiful course safe for all runners".  Next  year's Vermont Tech Invitational will be held on Saturday, Sept 10th, 2016.
