Vermont Tech to Host Second Annual Three Stallion Inn 5K
Vermont Technical College will hold the second annual Three Stallion Inn 5K on Saturday, September 15th 2012 at the Montague Golf Course in Randolph, Vermont. In addition to the 9:00am 5K Citizen's Race open to any registered participant, there will also be a 3K race for middle school aged runners, followed by a 5K for boys and girls high school racers, a 5K women's collegiate event and capping the day will be the 8K Men's collegiate race.
Last year's 5K was the inaugural cross country event sponsored by Vermont Tech. Initially, the race was meant as a collegiate meet, coupled with a high school meet and the Citizen's Race used as a VTC Cross Country team fundraiser. After seeing the devastation of Tropical Storm Irene on the local community the plans were altered at the request of the team and Head Coach Bob Dunkle in order to in some way benefit those in need. The race changed from team fundraiser to community fundraiser, with much of the proceeds collected from the Citizen's Race, which attracted 22 participants, being donated to an organization involved with local flood relief efforts.
"Even with the adjustments we had to make at the last minute due to damage on the course caused by the floods, last year's event exceeded our expectations," said Vermont Tech Cross Country Head Coach Bob Dunkle. "The team was extremely happy there was at least a little something we could do to help those in need in our community. We could not have done it without the significant efforts of the volunteers, 3C Race Productions, Ginny Richburg (Randolph Union High School Cross Country Head Coach), the participants and, of course, Sam Sammis (owner of Three Stallion Inn and Montague Golf Course) and the entire Montague Golf Course staff."
There is a full day of racing planned, as in addition to the Citizen's Race there will be an offering of a short 3K race for middle school students, which precedes the high school events. In 2011, there were approximately 200 athletes who took part in the high school and collegiate races. This year that number is expected to increase substantially, as high school from around the state and colleges from Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York have already pledged their attendance.
The course spans the back nine holes of Montague Golf Course, and has some sections just off the course in the woods. It starts on a level ground and moves to rolling hills with a short uphill mid-race. The race is mostly on a manicured grass fairway and covers a short section with a hardtop surface. Organizers have gone out of their way to make certain the course is spectator friendly, with approximately 2/3rds viewable from a single location. Pre-registration is available online and is $20.00 per registrant, while race day registration is $25.00 per racer.
