On Monday night the Vermont Tech men's basketball team took on the second seed Vikings from Villa Maria College in the USCAA Division II National Tournament held at Penn State - Fayette in Uniontown, Pennsylvania . After a hard fought battle the Knights stunned the Vikings 70-66.
The tenth seed Knights started quickly, and after Drake Perry stuck a transition three, the lead was 18-6. Scoring for the Knights slowed down over the next 8 minutes, as the Vikings pulled back to tie the game 25-25 with 5:17 to play in the half. Play continued to go back and forth, resulting in a 33 all half time score.
Vermont Tech struggled offensively to start the second half. With 7:56 to play the Knights trailed by nine, but still had much left to give. Drake Perry came off a ball screen and pulled up to tie the game at 66 with 1:12 left in the game. On the next possession Jeremiah Shaw was fouled on a defensive rebound, and calmly sank a pair of free throws to give the Knights a two point lead. On the ensuing possession, Tyrone Hilson stole the ball and was fouled. The Senior All- American stepped to he line and with six seconds on the clock, sealed the game, 70-66, with two clutch free throws.
Jeremiah Shaw paced the Knights with 20 points, including a perfect 10-10 from the foul line. Drake Perry added 16 points, and Tyrone Hilson had a 14 point, 14 rebound double-double. The Knights improve to 24-9 on the season.
The Knights will now face Penn State Wilkes-Barre in the National Semi-Final on Tuesday night. The game will tip at 5 p.m.
