On Saturday, February 23rd, the men's basketball team felts the highs a lows of college basketball. Early in the afternoon, the team watched the USCAA National Tournament Selection Show, and was elated to receive an at large-bid to the National Tournament. Later that night, they faced the disappointment of losing to Southern Maine in the Semi Final of the YSCC Tourament 82-74.
Dispite 13 turnovers, giving up 11 first half lay-ups, and nine offensive rebounds, the Knights went into the half up 33-32 thanks to a Jonathan Pritchett three at the buzzer.
The second half gave the men a chance to make some improvements on the glass and with ball control. Unfortunately, they were not able to. 10 second half turnovers and nine offensive rebounds again for the Seawolves proved to be the difference.
Head Coach Alex Tyrrell gave credit to Southern Maine.
"They beat us to loose balls all night", said Coach Tyrrell. "When we got shots our numbers were great but between the turnovers, and offensive rebounds, we weren't able to get enough possesions to win. Credit to Southern Maine for the intensity to which they played with tonight".
The Knights will be the 10 seed for the National Tournament, and face off against Penn State - Mont Alto in the first round. Tip is at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 3.
This is the second straight year that the men have earned a birth to the National Tournament. Last year they won the first round match - up before falling to eventual champions Berkley College - New York.
"I thought our shot selection in the semi final was the best it had been all year," added Coach Tyrrell. "If we can clean up our turnovers and rebound better, we will give ourselves a great opportunity to win".
"They guys have earned this opportunity and I am thrilled we get to experience this together", continued Tyrrell. "THe USCAA National Tournament is a great event, and will be a memory that lasts much longer then any game".
