The Vermont Tech men's basketball team defeated University of Maine-Machias 79-73 on Monday night in a Yankee Small College Conference contest.
The Clippers jumped out to an early 19-9 lead before the Knights went on a 12-4 run and cut the lead to 2 with seven minutes remaining in the half. The teams traded basketballs as the half continued, and the visitors maintained the two point lead going into half time.
The Knights struggled again to start the second half and Machias controlled play through star forward Travonne Thomson. With 8 minutes to play the Knights secured the lead and would not give it back. A Daniel Gill lay-up and Titus Smith free throws sealed the 79-73 win.
Coach Tyrrell was impressed by the visiting clippers.
"Machias really stuck it to us tonight", said Coach Tyrrell. "They competed hard and made it tough for us on the offensive end". "It was good to come away with the win."
The victory improves the Knights to 10-6 overall and 7-3 in Yankee Conference play.
