Rutland, VT - The Knights of Vermont Tech were able to hold off a hard charging College of St. Joe's to secure a conference road win by the final of 67-60.
After a close first ten minutes, the score tied at 15, the Knights went on a 25-9 run to take a 16 point lead into halftime. The run was keyed by an incredible 18 points from Brandon Matano (Jr./Honolulu, HI). In coming off the bench, Matano finished with a game-high 24 points. The score at the half was 40-24 in favor of the Knights.
CSJ, however, would not easily go away in the second half, as they were determined to do all they could to defend their home court. The Knights opened the lead up to 20 early in the period, but then the Saints chipped away slowly to bring the score closer and closer. With six minutes remaining Dee Anderson hit a three, followed cloesly by a Josh Otway layup that brough the game to within six points, VTC up 58-52.
The Knights would not let this game slip away against their in state and YSCC rivals, and continued to make big shots and free throws to keep the Saints at bay. Josh Lindsey (Sr./Palm Bay, FL) hit two free throws, followed by two from Freshman Sam Marler (Sydney, Australia), while Alex Tyrrell (Sr./Sydney, Australia) then hit a three to extend the lead further.
With the lead 65-53, 7-0 run to bring it back to five. The Saints were forced to foul, and Matano hit the last two free throws to make the final margin 7.
For the Knights, Tyrrel finished the game with 18 points, 9 rebounds. The Saints were led by Dre Anderson with 17 points, while Ramel Anderson had 12 and Dee Anderson had 11.
The men are now 16-8, 12-2 YSCC and on a 9 game winning streak. Their next game comes at home to the Fisher Falcons of the NAIA. Tip is scheduled for 730pm, after the women's contest, on Thursday, February 7th. Fisher bested the Knights in their first meeting this year.
