Knights' 2012/13 Men's and Women Basketball Season Recap
Men Back-to-Back YSCC Champions
Randolph Center, VT - Both the men's and women's basketball teams of Vermont Tech saw incredible success during the 2012/13 season. The men successfully defended their Yankee Small College Conference Championship, earning a return trip to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships. The women made progress of their own, finishing with a 10-win season and several individual accolades at both the conference and national level.
At the individual level, Ama Baker, Josh Lindsey, Alex Tyrrell and Kelly Vellek all earned YSCC First-Team All-Conference. Men's Coach Chris Leazier snagged the YSCC Coach of the Year award, and the men proved their professionalism as they were the recipients of the Sportsmanship award. Nationally, Tyrrell was named USCAA First-Team All-American, while Baker and Lindsey earned Second-Team honors and Vellek was named as Honorable Mention. In addition, Alyssa Cassanelli, Ryan Follensbee, Lindsey and Tyrrell received USCAA All-Academic Honors.
The Knights and Lady Knights left the season feeling good about their accomplishments, but also understanding there are many improvements that must be made in order to continue these types of successes in the future. Tyrrell and Lindsey graduate for the men, while Vellek, Rebekka Dimick and Brianna Bergeron depart for the women. These absences will leave large holes in the lineup for which the Knights will have to fill next year. The women are on the rise, winning more games than in the past, and becoming difficult to beat every time they step on the floor. The YSCC has taken notice as the Lady Knights are poised and ready to improve upon their second place finish in the YSCC West. Baker and Paige Wells will be the key returners next year, with Baker focused on becoming a First-Team All-American and Wells looking to again average a double-double and potentially grab All-Conference or All-American honors.
With the Knight men now as two-time defending YSCC champions, they will undoubtedly be a main target in the conference for 2013/14, receiving the absolute best from every team they face. Although they are losing much talent from this championship team, last year they lost the school's all-time leading scorer and still found a way to defend their championship. They are surely confident they can again accomplish this feat, although it will not be easy. Coach Leazier will be looking to reload, not rebuild, and continue the winning ways for men's basketball at Vermont Tech.
