RED CROSS YOUTH SWIM LESSONS

SUMMER SWIM LESSONS WILL BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!  Classes will be offered daily in 2-week sessions. 

Summer sessions have been set according to the following schedule.  Space is limited. Register in person or by phone at the SHAPE front desk 728-1384 or e-mail hlinehan@vtc.edu.

Class Details: The first day of each session, students will arrive by grade, according to the following schedule.  They will be tested during the first lesson as a group and placed into classes based on swim level.  Each class will be assigned a time, which will remain constant for the remainder of the session.  Classes will be in 40 minute increments, with a 5 minute break between each class.

MONDAY arrival times:

Students entering grades 1-2     first ½ hour

Students entering grades 3-4     second ½ hour

Students entering grades 5-6     third ½ hour

Students entering grades 7-8     fourth ½ hour

High school/adults                       fifth ½ hour

SWIM LESSON CLASS LEVELS

NOTE: It is common for students to continue in the same level for mutiple sessions.  On the last day of class, certificates will be awarded indicating the instructor's assessment of the child's current swim level.

Parent/Child Aquatics (5:00pm/9:00am): For kids under 5, Helps young children feel comfortable getting their face wet and being in a horizontal position. Adult must be in the water with the child. This class will not be offered during summer lessons.

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills.  Purpose: Helps students feel comfortable in the water. Must be at least 5 years old AND have completed Kindergarten (for summer session).

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills. Purpose: Gives students success with fundamental skills.

Level 3: Stroke Development.  Purpose: Build on the skills learned in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice.  Introduces formal strokes.

Level 4: Stroke Improvement. Purpose: Develops confidence in the strokes learned and improves other aquatic skills.

Level 5: Stroke Refinement. Purpose: Provide further coordination and refinement of strokes.

Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency. Refines the strokes so students swim with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.  4 different specialties are available within this level: Personal Water Safety, Lifeguard Readiness, Fitness Swimmer and Fundamentals of Diving.

Adult Beginner: For beginner adult swimmers who can't swim the length of the pool.  Adults who can swim the length of the pool but want to work on stroke improvement should sign up for level 5/6.

SHAPE offers a variety of Land and Water Aerobic Classes.  You may join a class at any time.   All classes are available for a daily fee if you are unable to make most classes or if want to try the class first.

This is an at-your-own-pace class, you make it as hard as you want based on your fitness level.  The next 6-week session will be offered in the late summer/early fall.
